September 2014: Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia!

Underwater in Alabama

On the first day we took our new Motorhome underwater as we went through the tunnel on I-10 in Mobile.

Forever bridges in Louisiana

This is one of many bridges in Louisiana. It is not the worst! We were stuck on an 18 mile long bridge for two hours. We didn't plan for any delays so this put us way behind schedule. It also made us realize that we needed to plan shorter travel days so that we have time to enjoy the trip.

On to Texas and Canyon Lake

Canyon Lake was our first "destination" since it is close to Sam's family in Boerne and San Antonio, Texas. The first couple of days were warm and sunny. Later, a big cold front came through leaving us wet and cold. They needed the rain though.

Abeline

Abeline, Texas was our first of short travel days. We arrived early at Abeline State Park. First, we tried to visit Lake Abeline but there was no water at all in it (due to drought) so we found our way to Buffalo Gap Historic Village. We still had time to hike the trails in the state park before leaving the next day for our second destination, Palo Duro Canyon.

Palo Duro Canyon

Sam has told me about Palo Duro Canyon for as long as I can remember. He visited with his family when he was young. I loved this area of Texas! By this time we realize that Molly really likes being a traveling dog!

Hiking Palo Duro Canyon, Wonderful!

I can breathe here! We hiked for miles in 100° + temperatures and it was so much easier than our humid hiking in Georgia.

Bad weather day so Around Palo Duro Canyon

The rain caught us again so we decided to visit Cadillac Ranch and then to Amarillo, Texas for BBQ.

Barbed Wire Museum

This was another short day added to break up a long drive. I'm glad we did it because we were able to see the largest cross in the western hemisphere and stop in at the barbed wire museum.

Lake Thunderbird, Oklahoma HORRIBLE!

Lake Thunderbird was a destination we could have done without! This State Park was filthy. Remember the "Crying Indian" commercial of the 70's? This was not a good first impression of Oklahoma. Trash floated in the water everywhere. Kids pulled it from the bottom in the swimming area and threw it at each other. The banks were covered in trash in areas away from people. The bath houses were in terrible shape and dirty. We left a day early. I chose not to post the bad pictures. This leaves few pictures for Lake Thunderbird!

K-River Campground near Antlers, OK

If we hadn't left Lake Thunderbird State Park early, we wouldn't have found the K-River campground near Antlers, Oklahoma. The campground is full hookup but still very rustic. It is on the Kiamichi River. We had the manager drive us up river to kayak back to the campground. We got back to find our jeep waiting for us in the river. The manager had parked it there to mark our take-out.

Crater Of Diamonds State Park

This was our fourth destination and it turned out to be a nice one. We stayed at Murfreesboro RV Park. The manager gave us lessons on diamond searching, loaned equipment, and helped us identify stones at the end of the day. The town of Murfreesboro, Arkansas had too many places to visit. We will return one day!

Crossing the Mississippi again

We were sad with this part of the trip because we were officially on our way home.

Miller's Ferry, Alabama

We enjoyed this  campground and may return someday. We only planned one night before getting back to Georgia.

Kolomoki Mounds, Georgia

This State Park is one I've wanted to visit for several years so we made it a destination as well. The employees there were so friendly (nice to be back to Georgia State Parks!). The park was almost empty but even if it had been near full we could have camped in a nice site. All the sites were nice!
