January 2015, Negril Jamaica

The Grand Lido Negril

We had a "Beachfront" room at the Grand Lido Negril which is located on Bloody Bay with two RIU Resorts and one Couples Resort. This section of beach is about two of the seven miles that make up Seven Mile Beach. The Grand Lido is sandwiched between the beach and the highway at the Negril airport. This took some getting used to! Jamaicans drive and honk their horns at everything all day and all night. Sam is sure an airplane took off from our room at two on our first morning. Almost all the rooms of the resort do face water. The beachfront are closest to the road.

The resort will be renovated soon. It seemed to be the average run down of most Caribbean resorts. The tub/shower was dangerous with a big step in. Getting out was easier because the handles are in front of you. No, we NEVER use jetted tubs! Our back doors had about 1½" gap at the top. We were careful to close the blinds in the evening before turning on the light so we didn't draw any bugs into the room. Overall, I thought the place was nice.

Sunk Boat

We had a nice day on Monday after arriving late on Sunday. Thinking we had an entire week ahead of us, we didn't take advantage of the watersports (Hobies and kayaks). Tuesday morning the winds hit and we had red flags for several days. Red flags meant no SCUBA, sailing, or kayaking. It also meant sandblasting to anyone on the beach! At least we had sun and warm waters. And soon the resort had a new option of a shore dive on a wreck as they sunk their ski boat in the high waves!

Windy Weather, Margaritaville

Red flags and wind continued. Clouds blew through without any rain. We decided to go to Margraitaville for some boat drinks.

Birthday

Finally, a yellow flag day arrives. Sam took a paddle board out for the first time and I took a kayak. No better way to spend my birthday. We ate at the Italian restaurant so I had tiramisu for birthday cake.

Last day

A nice rainbow marked the end of our red and yellow flag days. The green flag arrived on the day we had to leave. We did get our first rain as we waited for our ride to the airport in Montego Bay.
