FDR State Park

For quick weekend trips, we enjoy using the State Parks in our area. FDR is a park that we use quite often for day trips too. It is the largest State Park in Georgia. The Pine Mountain Trail zig-zags across the ridge for 23 miles through the state park. The park has a total of 42 miles of trails for hiking. I am sure we have walked on all sections but we have a few sections that we like to hike on day trips and have completed many times. This trip we hiked from the campground (near the park office) to Callaway Gardens Country Store at the beginning of the Pine Mountain Trail. I don't think we've walked this entire section since Jessi and Michael were 5 and 4 (now 25 and 24!). It brought back memories of the two running the trail with their tree and insect books so they could find something to identify. Now we look forward to grandson, Tyler, learning to hike and study nature.

The campground at FDR is large but it seems to be one of the more popular so is often full. Earlier this year we were unable to get reservations even when we tried to book several weeks before our date. We usually get a nice selection of sites when we arrive on Wednesdays but those arriving on Friday have limited choices!
